The TDSB Inner City Advisory Committee
The Inner City Advisory Committee (ICAC) was set up in May 2005, on the advice of the TDSB Task Force on Model Schools for Inner Cities. As a partner of the ICAC, CUS members are active in the Model School Research Committee and in the Model School Summer Institute Committee.
Currently, the primary role of the ICAC is to oversee the implementation of the Task Force Report. A key recommendation of this report was the creation of seven inner city Model Schools. In September 2006, the first three Model Schools (Phase One) opened their doors: Willow Park Junior Public School in East Scarborough; Nelson Mandela Park Public School in Regent Park; and Firgrove Public School in the Jane/Finch community.
TDSB Model School Phase 3
Work has begun on Phase 3 of the Model School for Inner Cities Project. The new phase is called Beyond Elementary. A Consultative Work Group on Inner City Education for Grades 7-12 has been formed. The goal of the Work Group is to determine how the Model School elementary project can be adapted and implemented for students in the Intermediate grades, and for high school students.
The Work Group has six Coordinators, including Jeff Kugler, Executive Director of the Centre for Urban Schooling. An initial forum has already been held, and there will be four subsequent meetings of the Work Group. Each meeting will focus on different aspects of schooling.
