The Network of New Inner City Teachers (NNICT)
Research clearly demonstrates that new teachers face difficulties in their initial years of teaching. It is particularly difficult, however, for new teachers who work at schools in underserved urban communities to feel successful, and to remain teaching in these schools.
Thus, the Centre for Urban Schooling has initiated a networking and support group for graduates of the Inner City Option, beginning in Fall, 2007. This is an attempt to influence the quality of teaching for inner city students, as well as to support our graduates through their first years of teaching. The NNICT will serve several important roles for the new inner city teachers:
- Provide a social support network for the teachers, and allow relationships built during the pre-service year to be maintained and solidified
- Respond to the needs of the ICO graduates define their specific roles as new teachers
- Serve as a vehicle for continued dialogue around teaching for social justice in inner city schools and communities, helping new teachers to stay in touch with their ideals about teaching
The NNICT also has research component, thus ensuring that what the Network does has a strong impact on new teachers and their students.
