Integrated First Nations Unit Plan (Grade 6)

 

Lessons 1-3

Lesson Length: 3 x 50 min

Visual Art

Lesson Description:
Part 1: Students will be introduced to First Nations art by viewing a youtube clip. After the clip, in small groups, stduents will be asked to provide a description for a  piece of art that they have never viewed before. This will lead into a class discussion about the art. Students will then be asked to write a at least 2 pages in their literacy journals, about a personal story that describes their origin. They will also be required to bring in a picture of three objects that illustrate their origins.

Part2: Students will be introducted to the us eof x-ray imaging via an image of an x-ray of Homer Simpson's brain. This illustrates how the First Nations artist used x-ray imaging to portray characters in the story. Students will be asked to illustrate their own personal story which will be bound in a book and presented on parents night.
