Geometry and Islamic Art (3 LESSONS) (GRADE 8, SPECIAL ED)

Geography

Language Arts:
Read and demonstrate understanding of a variety of texts, reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses as a reader.

Visual Arts:
Knowledge of Elemenets, Creative Work, Creative Thinking.

Culture/Region of Interest: 
Muslim Culture and Islamic Faith.

Lesson Description:
Originally designed for a special education classroom, but can be adapted.  As a class read the article "Girl, Interrupted."  Students will work through the story and discuss the events and words they don't understand. Next students will be introduced to a very different aspect of this culture, the beautiful art from Islamic culture.  Students will work in groups to create art using isometric grids.

World Tessellations - aka Patterns (Grade 3-4)

Math:
Identify flips, slides and turns of shapes, compare and sort polygons, lines of symmetry.

Culture/Region of Interest: 
Islamic Tessellations, World Tesselations (patterns).

Lesson Description:
Students will be introduced to images of tessellations and asked if they have ever seen things like this before.  The teacher will define tessllations and give examples of some shapes that tesselate and things that don't (see Shapes That Tessolate.doc).  Studtens will work in groups to create 4 different tesellations and will be introduced to tessellations from around the world.
