The power of the letter for the children of Attawapiskat: Workshops in writing to persuade: 5 lessons (Grade 6)

 

Lesson 1

Lesson Length: 50 min
Assessment:    Formative 

Language Arts

Lesson Description:
Students will learn about the Attawapiskat and the communities fight to have a school built in the area for local youth. Students will watch a youtube video about the issue, and then read articles about the issues, extracting important facts, and placing those facts into a placemat, which will be shared with the rest of the class. The purpose of this lesson is to set students up for a persuasive writing assignment, where they will write a letter, expressing their opinion on the issue. Students will then be asked to make two posters, one for and one against the issues and arrange themselves according to how strongly they feel about the issue.

Explaining the components of Persuasive Opinion Writing. How to organize facts for argument. Plus a work period

Lesson 3

Lesson Length: 50 min

Language Arts

Lesson Description:
Counter arguments and how they can strengthen ones main argument: Students will read an article from the Toronto Star and examine how the author has included opinions of the opposition. Discuss how this strengthens the authors main argument, and how this is a useful tool for an argumentative writer.

Lesson 4

Lesson Length: 50 min
Assessment:    Formative

Language Arts 

Lesson Description:
Using the Smartboard, students will be introduced to an online letter generator, where they can create their own templates for their letter. Teacher will move around and conference with various students. Students who have grasped the concept, may share their work with the class.

Lesson 5

Lesson Length: 50 min

Lesson Description:
Use of language: Students will discuss and think/pair/share use of language in persuasive writing, and how language can have an affect the readers response to an opinion piece.
