Water media unit : 5 lessons (Grade 8)


 


 
Lesson 1 (2 Periods)

Science

Lesson Length: 2 x 40 min
Assessment: Formative

Lesson Description:
Students will observe two experiments that illustrate the permeability of water, and participate in one experiment. Students will take notes on their observations during the first class, and then during the second class, they will tabulate their findings using scientific language from the unit and hand it in for assessment.

Lesson 2 (2 Periods)

Art:
Media Arts

Lesson Length: 2 x 40 min
Assessment:    Summative

Lesson Description:
This lesson is part of a campaign to raise awareness about issues surrounding water. Students may choose to create a poster or a script for a dramatic or radio presentation raising awareness about water related issues. Prior to this class, students will have already begun their project in their language arts class. Today they will have a work period where they may either start using visual arts equipment or the recording equipment. At the end of class students will reflect on their work in a journal entry. In the following media class, students will present their work and discuss what aspects of the ads were most effective.

Lesson 3 (7 Periods)

Art:
Media Arts

Language Art

Lesson Length: 7 x 40 min
Assessment:    Diagonostic, Formative, and Summative

Lesson Description:
Students will form groups and decide on which aspect of water they want to concentrate their media piece on. Throughout the next few days, students will research both in the library and with use of the computer lab, to put together their presentation. They will then use two media  periods to create their project (either through visual arts or production of a video or audio recording) and then present their finished work to the class.

Lesson 4

Math

Lesson Length: 40 min
Assessment: Diagnostic and Formative

Lesson Description:
students will take the results they have gathered from their science lab and convert the results from seconds to minutes, calculate the volumetric flow, and rank the soils from least to most permeable.

Lesson 5

Math:
Measurement

Lesson Length: 40 min
Assessment:    Diagonostic and Formative

Lesson Description:
students must calculate how much water their family uses each day, with consideration of hot water and which activities use up the most water. Students must then calculate how large of a water tank they would need to hold the water they use daily, as well as how much rain fall they would need to catch in order to satisfy their families needs, how much of the water needs to be clear and how much of the grey water they could reuse.

Lesson 6

Art:
Media Arts

Lesson Length: 40 min
Assessment:    Formative and Summative

Lesson Description:
Students will view two service announcements regarding water and compare the two. Students will have to come up with their own criteria and decide which ad is more effective. They will then present their findings to the class. Students are also required to produce a one page paper on the comparison and why they believe one ad is more or less effective then another.

Lesson 7

Human Geography

Lesson Length: 40 min
Assessment:    n/a

Lesson Description:
students will review important aspects of map reading. They will then look at a specific area of land, and decide how to map it if it were to be settled in relation to the body of water.

Lesson 8

Human Geography

Lesson Length: 40 min

Lesson Description:
Students will investigate human settlement in relation to bodies of water, and how water has an affect on where people of various culture choose to live.
