Stealing the Sun: Surface Area and Retangualr Prisims: 2 lessons (Grade 6)

Lesson 1

Math

Lesson Length: 50 min

Assessment:    Diagnostic / Formative

Lesson Description:

After reading about the creation stories of two Aboriginal groups, students will be informed that they will present these stories to their reading pairs, via dramatic performance. However, they need props to contribute to the performance, so they will make the props in math class. Students must create sketches of their rectangle, and figure out how big the surface area of the rectangle needs to be. While each student will create their own rectangle, students will work in groups and record their findings on chart paper.

Lesson 2

Math

Lesson Length: 50 min

Assessment:    Summative

Lesson Description:

Now that students have figured out the measurements of their rectangle boxes, they will create them using cardboard and popsicle sticks. Students will hand in their finished work to be looked over by the teacher.

Stereotypes by Numbers:  Investigating and Graphing the Representations of First Nation, Inuit and Métis peoples in School Library Materials: 4 Lessons (Grade 6)

Lesson 1

Math

Lesson Length: 50 min

Assessment:    Diagnostic

Lesson Description:

Introduction to various types of graphs. Students will view a clip from the film "From Angela" and identify the stereotypes that are illustrated throughout the scene. Students are then asked to write in their math journal explaining which types of graphs they would not use to represent data about stereotypes and why?

Lesson 2

Math

Lesson Length: 50 min

Assessment:    Formative

Lesson Description:

Student s will be divided into groups and taken to the library where they will be given a question to answer while investigating the books about First Nations peoples. Once students have answered their question they will compare their answer with a partner group that shares their question.

Lesson 3 & 4

Math

Lesson Length: 60 min

Assessment:    Summative

Lesson Description:

Students will receive the rubric for the assignment. And will go to the computer lab to represent their finding in an excel spread sheet. Students will then present their findings in class.
